VICE PRESIDENT CANADIAN SAILING

TEAM REPORT

Evert Bastet

The year 2001 was the beginning of our new long-term development program.  Our efforts have been concentrated on improving and expanding our coaching staff and to increase coaching support for our athletes.  With the addition of Rob Fox in Ontario we now have three National Sports Center coaches.  The other two are Brian Todd in Halifax and Tine Moberg-Parker in Vancouver.  Efforts are underway to hire an additional National coach and/or a half-time National coach.

One of the program strategies was to implement core training programs based in North America.  Training camps and clinics were held for various classes.  We are striving towards a minimum of two camps per class per year.  The focus of these class specific programs is to improve skill level, fitness, teamwork and to improve our international results.  Our CST athletes have shown they have the right stuff.  My congratulations go to the following athletes that achieved top sixteen at the worlds; Chris Cook, Larry Lemieux, Jen Provan, Nikola Girke, Joanne Abbott, Martha Henderson and Kari MacKay.   We look forward to seeing more of our promising sailors excel at the international level.

Great results are also expected at the final Worlds of the year, the 2001 World Disabled Sailing Championships, which will have just concluded at the time of this reading.

Led by CYA staff member  David Wolff, sponsorship programs are being implemented including an Athlete’s Finder’s Fee. We all recognize the need for additional funding beyond Sport Canada’s contributions if we want to maintain a high performance program.

This past year has been a learning year for myself and I would like to acknowledge my sincere thanks to all the CYA staff in Kingston, our coaching staff,  and a special thanks to our High Performance Director, Ken Dool.  The ongoing development of the CST is a direct result of the dedication, enthusiasm and hard work by everyone involved. Let’s show them what Canadian sailors are made of!
