Race Protocol
Prior to race day racers, parents and coaches must inspect equipment….
- Baskets
on poles
- Bindings
properly adjusted
- Skis
waxed and tuned
- No
hand guards on poles for GS races
- Helmets
safe and fitted
- The
coach must bring the tool and suit bag.
The responsibilities of the coach upon arrival at the host mountain are…
- (One
coach or designated parent) take the racers out on the mountain to warm up
and ski as soon as lift tickets are issued.
- The
second coach attends the “coaches meeting» writes all information
and informs the racers and parents.
- Everyone
must be clear on the schedule of events.
- Parents
designated as helpers must given clear direction on their
responsibilities before going out.
- Be
back in time for course inspection.
- Course
inspection should be in two smaller groups rather than a large one.
- The
racers must be kept active to increase their body temperature and energy
levels high.
- After
course inspection, ask the racers for feedback on the course layout. Make
sure they are clear on the most effective strategy and what they need to
do the get the best result.
- During
the race, one coach must remain with the racers at the start and the other
or designated parent at the finish to welcome the racer.
- A
parent helper should be assigned to take the uniforms to the finish to
keep the racers warm.
- If
possible, keep the racers skiing
rather than waiting at the top, this will help them stay focused.
- Racers
that have completed the first run should go up and encourage those waiting
their turn.

- Give
the racers clear instructions on what to do between runs.
- One
of the coaches must wait for the disqualification results.
- At
the end of the race, make sure that parents and racers alike thank the
volunteers of the host mountain.
- Keep
skiing until results are available.
- Show
up for results and make sure our racers project good “sportsmanship”. It
is very important to leave a good image of the Owls Head Ski Team.
- The
coach has the ultimate responsibility for the racers. If any of the above
cannot be implemented due to weather or any other adverse conditions it is
up to the coach to make the call.
The responsibilities of the parents at the race are…
- To
act as a support to the coaches.
- Carry
equipment, clothing, food etc.
- Wait
for the racers at the finish and gather the team.
- Parents
can act as a relay between coaches and racers.
- Parents
will be assigned the task of carrying the suits to the finish as indicated
above.
- Parents
can be great motivators. They can encourage and keep a positive attitude
among the team.
- Parents
should be skiing with the team during the warm up period.
- A
parent should be designated to wait for latecomers with the lift ticket
bib and instructions.
- Parents
can take the racers inside if they need to warm up or have lunch.
